Lately we have been experimenting with some customization ideas intended to make the Vertex a more versatile, capable and fun platform.  Today we present experimental results on the development of wing extensions to increase its forward flight time.  These light-weight extensions can be installed in a matter of seconds to increase the wingspan from around 4 feet (1.2m)  to just under 6 feet (1.8m).

Simulations and flight tests have have demonstrated an increase in maximum cruise time of over 20 minutes and a 4.5-mile (7.2 km) increase in flight range at the expense of a slight reduction in cruise speed and hover time.  This allows the Vertex to cruise for up to 1 hour and 21 miles (33.8 km).

This means that the user can now change between three flight configurations in a matter of seconds to quickly adapt the Vertex to the specific mission requirements.  The three configurations are:

Hover configuration: remove wings for best multicopter performance

Standard hybrid configuration: attach the wings for best hybrid performance

Long-range hybrid configuration: add the wing extensions for best long-range airplane performance
